Tirgu-Mures - Statistics
According to the results of the last census of 2002, the municipality of Tirgu-Mures counts 149,577 inhabitants. The population of the town is made up of the following ethnic groups: Romanians – 75,317 (50.35%), Hungarians – 69,825 (46.68%), Gypsies – 3,759 (2.51%), Germans - 275 (0.18%), other ethnic groups – 367 (0.17%). The population pattern according to denominations is the following: Orthodox – 69,726 (46.62%), Protestants – 44,849 (29.98%), Roman-Catholics – 20,156 (13.48%), Greek-Catholics – 4,051 (2.71%), Unitarians – 3,891 (2.60%), other denominations (Evangelic of Augustan confession, Sinodo-Presbiterian Lutheran Evangelic, Adventist of the seventh day, Baptist, Penticostal, Christian after the Evangelium) – 6,904 (4.6%). The Mureş county, with an area of 6,696 km2, is situated in the North-Central part of Romania, representing approximately 3% of the country’s total area. On the 18th March 2002, according to the results of the census, the stable population of the Mureş county was of 579,862 inhabitants (53.2% Romanians, 39.3% Hungarians, 7% Roma, 0.3% Germans and other ethnic groups), thus occupying the 14th position in the hierarchy of the country’s counties, with a majority of 2.7 %. Compared to the census from 1992, the number of inhabitants has decreased with 30,191, respectively 4.9%. As far as it regards the population pattern according to gender, in 2002, as well as at the previous census of 1992, one can notice a slight numerical majority of the female population: males – 283,762 (48.9%), females – 296,100 (51.1%). 48.8% of the county’s population belong to the urban environment, and 51.2% to the rural environment. The main municipalities and towns of the county are: the municipality of Tîrgu-Mureş (county capital) with 149,577 inhabitants, the municipality of Reghin – 36,023 inhabitants, the municipality of Sighisoara – 32,287 inhabitants, the municipality of Tîrnăveni – 26,537 inhabitants, the town of Iernut – 9,440 inhabitants, the town of Luduş – 14,407 inhabitants, the town of Sovata – 11,568 inhabitants.
